24 hours in St Andrews

2 years agoPosted in Travel

There's nothing better than a little escape; time out from everyday life to recharge those batteries. For me, it's the ultimate tonic.

After some manic months, I was desperate for a quick getaway – somewhere with minimal travel time and a cosmopolitan vibe. Cue, St Andrews. Located on the east coast of Fife and just a 50-mile drive from Edinburgh, St Andrews has stacks of appeal for an overnighter or short break. Its world-famous golf courses, historic uni, beautiful beaches and vibrant town centre pull in crowds from all over the world yet it still feels atmospheric, quaint and pretty. It was the perfect destination for my recent girlie getaway with my mum. Our remit? To relax in luxurious surroundings, dine on divine food and just reboot.

Rusacks

STAY

The iconic award-winning Rusacks St Andrews hotel relaunched in September 2021, following extensive interior and exterior renovations. My word, this is one seriously impressive hotel and the attention to detail is on point. As well as the original period building, there is now an imposing 5-storey glass fronted extension with 44 guest suites (complete with balconies) and a stunning rooftop restaurant, aptly named 18, with breath-taking views overlooking the 18th green at The Old Course, West Sands and beyond.

Rusacks Reception

The hotel is unapologetically luxe and supremely stylish but remains very welcoming with super friendly staff. The public areas are full of inviting nooks and crannies, with sumptuous furnishings, that make you just want to relax with a book, take your laptop or sit and watch the world go by. The layout has been completely rejigged; the old bar demolished with the new modern extension in its place. There’s also a new light and airy restaurant called The Bridge, it’s where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea (classic £29.50 or with a glass of champagne £39.50). Ask for a seat by the window to take advantage of those amazing views as you tuck into the selection of chef’s artisan finger sandwiches, assorted homemade scones and delicious, sweet treats. It’s a real treat. The hotel’s central location is a big plus too. It means you can walk most places, whether you’re golfing, sightseeing, shopping or eating out, there really is so much on your doorstep.

SLEEP

There’s a variety of room grades to choose from (great for those on a budget), each looking like something out of an interior’s magazine and bursting with personality and sumptuous touches. Think Highland inspired décor with warm woods, prints, luxe fabrics and an abundance of amenities. Our twin room came with a sofa area and balcony and, I must admit, it was hard to leave. The attention to detail is impressive. The fluffy robes, the slick spa-like bathrooms, the comfiest bed I’ve probably ever slept in.

Balgove Lader

EAT

There’s a myriad of restaurants, bars and eateries in St Andrews but on the outskirts of town, you’ll find utter foodie heaven at Balgove Larder. Home to a farm shop, café, Steak Barn, butchery and outdoors Pizza Box, I’ve long been a fan of the farm shop but only just discovered the café. And oh, what a FIND. They don’t take bookings so my advice would be to arrive early before the lunchtime rush – it’s a popular spot! On the menu, you’ll find traditional, wholesome, home cooked food, using locally sourced ingredients. Recommendations include the moreish East Neuk Smoked Chowder, £6.95, filled with chunks of fresh fish and the most delicious, flavoursome chicken liver pate served with cranberry and orange chutney and toast, £6.50.

Balgrove

For something more substantial try the Balgove Steak pie with melt in the mouth tender slow cooked beef (butchered on the premises), seasonal vegetables and roasted thyme baby potatoes, £11.50. Or the incredibly tasty fish cakes with creamed leeks, £9.25. It’s all so, so good. If you’ve room for dessert, the Scottish cheese board, £8.25, is well worth the indulgence. Everything here is organic and fresh – it’s a foodie paradise. We couldn't resist buying some goodies to take home too!

18 Rusacks

For swish surroundings and a chance to dress up, make a dinner reservation at 18 within Rusacks St Andrews Hotel. The rooftop restaurant is undoubtedly one of the top dining destinations in town and it’s led by award-winning chef Derek Johnstone. Offering everything from oysters to starters of baked hand caught diver scallop, Jerusalem artichoke, apple and truffle, £16, and mains of 32-day aged Aberdeen Angus beef, North sea Cod and Pan fried Stonebass, the menu featuring locally sourced Scottish beef, seafood and game is sure to satisfy. My fillet was cooked to utter perfection and is up there with the best I’ve had. The stonebass with smoked mussels was another culinary winner.

EXPLORE

After all that decadent dining, we chose to blow away the cobwebs with a walk along on West Sands. The beautiful stretch of beach is a popular hotspot for dog walkers, horse riders, runners, families and friends all getting their steps in. The more adventurous can also try water sports and Land yachting with Blown Away. Make time to explore the high street, shop independent and discover coffee shops, delis and bars galore – the vibe is just great. Oh, and back at the Rusacks St Andrews, get into a little swing with their mini putting green on the rooftop terrace or a snooker table indoors in the wood panelled gallery. Perfection.

My only gripe during my trip away? I loved it so much I wished I’d booked a second night. So, beware… this is a place you won’t want to leave. Mum has already been back for a return visit!
