Three Simple Tips to Help Guide Your Child’s First Experience with a Mobile Phone

Over the past few months I’m been ‘chatting’ to Kylie about her daughter getting a mobile and we’ve been chatting about maybe the possibility of doing a podcast. I know last year I did a page for egg about grief and loss coming up to Christmas so it popped up into my head it might be helpful, for your audience to do a short blog about tips about getting kids mobile phones (I know this all too well given I’ve got two teens…been there, done that!!) so wanted just to add this for you and if you wanted to use it. If you do please let me know if you want an up to date photo or if there’s anything else or even another subject I can help with.

Three Simple Tips to Help Guide Your Child’s First Experience with a Mobile Phone

As a single mum with two teenagers, I know all too well how difficult it is to navigate the world of kids and mobile phones. Finding the right balance between staying connected, setting boundaries, and building trust can be challenging. Here are three tips I’ve found helpful—mum to mum—that can make this transition smoother and more positive for everyone.

1. Start with a Conversation, Not Rules

Instead of setting strict rules right away, begin with an open conversation. Ask your child how they feel about having a phone and listen to them. Share your expectations and concerns in a way that builds trust. This approach makes it easier to agree on fair guidelines together and mutually respectful.

2. Create Tech-Free Times and Spaces for the Family

I do this a lot! Set up regular tech-free moments, like family mealtimes, family events, bedtime, for everyone—including parents! This helps your child see that balance is healthy for all of us and keeps family time focused and connected. Don’t expect your kid to have good boundaries if you don’t.

3. Encourage Purposeful Use, Not Just Scrolling

Teach your child to be mindful of how they use their phone. Are they learning, creating, or connecting meaningfully? Help them balance fun with intentional use, making phone time more fulfilling and less of a habit.

These simple guidelines can turn phone ownership into a positive experience that strengthens trust and helps build healthy habits in your family. Remember to keep safety in mind too - things like privacy settings and who they're connecting with can make a big difference in keeping kids secure.
