Friday was a special day – a mother-daughter date day, just the two of us. It was long overdue. Our destination? The renowned Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, a swish five-star hotel that seemed tailor-made for our special afternoon tea experience.
The interior of the hotel exudes a sense of timeless luxury, it has some seriously plush furnishings and elegant decor. After a few oohs and aahs from Ottilie who was feeling very grown up in the surroundings, we made our way to the Road Hole Restaurant on the fourth floor where the picture-perfect table had been set for two with delicate china and silverware. Talk about a table with a view. There’s no doubt, this is an impressive setting, overlooking the golf course and West Sands.
As we settled into our seats, my daughter's eyes sparkled at the array of treats before us. We sipped on fragrant loose-leaf teas from Edinburgh-based PekoeTea and devoured good-sized sandwiches. There were the most amazing warm sausage rolls, freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream, mini choux with white chocolate (Ottilie’s favourite) and those cakes… pretty as a picture. Feeling defeated after an amazing feast, we ended up taking some sweet treats home in boxes, much to my husband’s delight.
The whole experience was second to none. The attentive staff pampered us with impeccable service, ensuring that our experience was nothing short of perfection. Of course, I enjoyed my complimentary glass of fizz using my egg membership too… It would have been rude not to enjoy some bubbles after all!
Leaving the Old Course Hotel, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the precious time spent with Ottilie. Our mummy-daughter date day had been a success, a perfect blend of indulgence, great food and great chat. Goodness, she’s growing up fast.
I’d highly recommend afternoon tea at the Old Course. A perfect day trip, girls day out (Champagne version a must for proper grown-ups) or a special occasion in a decadent surround. Treat yourself, you’re worth it!
