The Royal Highland Show - A family event not to be missed!

Team egg got to experience their first ever, yes EVER, Royal Highland Show this year. And what a fun few days we had. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was bustling with excitement and anticipation. The event held at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston, Edinburgh, draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. With so much to see and do, it's easy to see why it's so popular.

As we wandered through the grounds, our first stop was the Forestry Arena where we were greeted by an incredible variety of activities and displays. The daredevil mountain bikers caught our attention first and their stunts were wowing the audience. Nearby, the axe throwing competition and live chainsaw carving provided a thrilling show that kept us on the edge of our seats. We even watched some impressive pole climbing – there really was something for everyone.

Next up, we headed to the Countryside arena, where there was a new fun-packed kid zone with lots of activities to entertain and educate our little ones. Our mini eggs loved the face painting, farmyard abstract art station, and the play park. We can’t forget our favourite part which was the canoes which were free to go on - perfect if you want to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. There were also various shows to watch including Sealpin Gundog demonstrations and birds of prey demonstrations by Elite Falconry which we were mesmerising.

For food lovers, the Scotland’s Larder area is a foodies paradise. We sampled delicious cheeses, fresh strawberries, Tunnocks teacake brownies, and loads of fresh honey.

The cookery demos at the Food for Thought Cookery Theatre were a highlight, with top chefs including Paul Terris and Craig Palmer sharing their culinary secrets. We savoured every bite from the numerous food vendors, each offering unique and delectable treats... A big shout out for our favourite treats from Well Hung with their deeelicious burgers and Johnnie Walker bar for their incredible passionfruit slushies 😋

The RHET Discovery Centre and honey marquee were a hit with the kids - they loved Milking Mabel. The honey marquee offers a sweet-smelling exploration into everything honey-related, where the kids can learn the ‘bee dance,’ taste honey, make beeswax candles, and spot a queen bee in a real hive.

And of course, the traditional farming events are the heart of the show. We watched in awe as the country’s top shearers competed for the Scottish National Champion title at the Breed Village and our animal-loving kids got nose-to-muzzle with fuzzy Blacknose Valais sheep.

As the day turned to night, Kirsten and Lauren went on to the Royal Highland Hoolie. They enjoyed live folk and country music, with their favourite performances being Tide Lines, Trail West and Nathan Evans (famous for his viral Sea Shanty song!) making it the perfect end to our day! The atmosphere was electric, and the music was fantastic!
