Scottish stylist, entrepreneur and all-around sassy boss, Sophie turned lockdown into an opportunity, launching EARSASS - a jewellery brand that started with statement earrings and quickly expanded into necklaces, bracelets and rings. Here, Sophie shares her journey with egg – talking about everything from growing up in Pitlochry to her love of bold fashion, confidence and the power of self-expression.
Was it written in the stars that you’d have your own business one day?
I had a wonderful childhood growing up in Pitlochry. I was surrounded by inspiration. I watched my parents transform our estate house into a thriving hotel. Their passion and hard work taught me firsthand what it takes to build something from the ground up.
From a young age, I knew I wanted something of my own - something creative, something I could pour my heart into. Whether through design, food, or business, I was always drawn to creating something unique. So, was it written in the stars? I like to think so.
How would your teachers describe you?
A flamboyant people person - always chatting, full of energy, and never sitting still! I was constantly creating, whether it was a masterpiece or bit of a mess, and I loved bringing big ideas to life in my own wonderfully chaotic way!

Why jewellery?
I’ve always loved bold fashion, and statement earrings became an obsession. When I couldn’t find pieces that felt unique and full of personality, I started making them myself. Funnily enough, I used to sell earrings as a schoolgirl in the local post office, something I’d forgotten until recently! Looking back, my passion for jewellery has been there all along.
A defining moment came when I met Isabella Blow, founder of Alexander McQueen, Honour Frazer, Sophie Dahl, Phillip Treacy and so many other incredible designers. I had the incredible opportunity to work with her in London on one of Philip Treacy’s hat shows at the V&A. At the time, I was studying fashion and millinery, fully immersed in creativity, but Isabella took that to the next level. She showed me what was possible when you truly believe in your vision. That experience gave me the confidence to fully pursue my passion for jewellery.
What do you love most about your job?
Connecting with customers, having real conversations and hearing their stories. They are why I do this! I also love the EARSASS team; while I own the brand, it’s a joint effort, and they bring so much passion. And, of course, designing new collections - it’s what makes my soul happy!
Does fashion give confidence?
Absolutely! Fashion is self-expression. Whether it’s through bold, statement earrings or a unique outfit, fashion it lets you showcase who you are and what you stand for. It’s about feeling fabulous and embracing a sense of freedom, expressing who you really are without fear of judgement. Bold colours and statement pieces lift my spirit, and I truly believe that when we feel great in what we wear, we inspire confidence in ourselves and others.
Your first years in business - what did you learn?
A whirlwind of growth, creativity, and resilience! I had to learn everything to turn my passion into a business. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but every challenge became an opportunity to refine my approach, whether it was learning the ropes of marketing, managing finances, or finding my unique voice in a crowded market.

The biggest lesson?
Stay true to your vision, even when it feels like the world is telling you to conform. Also, never be afraid to ask for help! So many people are willing to share advice and resources, and reaching out made a huge difference in keeping things running smoothly.
Who do you go to for advice?
My incredible friend Holly, a tarot reader. Tarot has become my therapy, both personally and for business, and Holly provides non-judgmental guidance that always helps me feel grounded. My partner Flemming is also a huge support. He is Danish and lives in Denmark but when he is here, he’s often found in my workshop folding boxes, bringing me flowers and giving me big kisses to keep me going.
And, of course, my friends, family, and my late cousin Issy who took her life, remain a massive inspiration. Issy was a huge part of EAR SASS, and her memory keeps me pushing forward every day.
How important is personal branding for business?
It’s everything! It’s the heart and soul of my business. It’s not just about the jewellery I create; it’s about confidence, individuality, and expressing who you truly are without judgment.
My advice to anyone looking to strengthen their personal brand? Be authentically you. Find what makes you different and lean into it. Don’t be afraid to take risks—whether that’s in your designs, your messaging, or how you show up in the world.
What does work-life balance mean to you?
It’s about feeling fabulous in every aspect of life - whether that’s running my business, spending time with the people I love, or taking a moment to recharge. Creativity is at the heart of everything I do, but I’ve learned that to stay inspired, I need to switch off sometimes. Walking my dog Cello, exercising, cooking for friends, and shopping (of course!) help me reset. Spending time with my boyfriend, Flemming, between Denmark and the UK also brings me so much joy—it’s all about balance!
Tell us about EARSASS?
It officially launched in 2020, during the first lockdown, a time when I found myself reflecting deeply on what truly mattered to me. With our family hotel closed due to Covid, I was given the opportunity to do something for myself - something I had always wanted to do. The concept for the business grew from my passion for statement earrings and jewellery that could make a statement about the person wearing it, celebrating confidence and individuality.
Your favourite earring?
The Tallia! Bold, pink, and one of the first earrings I ever launched. It’s the ultimate go-to statement piece that lifts any outfit or mood!

Your pinch-me moment?
When the Princess of Wales wore the Issy Star earrings on World Mental Health Day. I felt truly honoured by her support. I created the Issy Star earrings in memory of my cousin Issy, who tragically took her life. It was a devastating loss for our entire family, and I wanted to do something to keep her spirit alive. With every pair of Issy Star earrings sold, £5 is donated to our chosen charity, Brave Mind, which supports mental health. So far, we’ve raised over £15,000, and that’s a testament to the power of community, remembrance, and making a difference.
What’s next for EARSASS?
So much! We’re expanding the Issy Star collection with a bracelet and necklace, which feels like a natural next step in continuing Issy’s legacy and supporting mental health awareness. We’re also launching a beautiful wellbeing and healing necklace collection, made with real crystals and gemstones. This collection is all about energy, positivity, and feeling uplifted. Exciting times ahead!
Fun fact about you?
I was once a PA to the King of Qatar… and I’m starring in a film with Caprise coming out this December!
Favourite podcast or book?
Codie Sanchez’s episode on Steven Bartlett’s podcast about getting rich—her mindset is so empowering. I also love Vex King for daily inspiration.
How do you spend your time off?
Cooking, hosting, and spending time with friends. Or, curling up with a glass of red wine and a great series. Devastated that Succession is over!
Best thing about Edinburgh?
The Glen Bar - cocktails and a cheese board… heaven! Oh, and shopping, of course.

I’m doing a road show with Iolla this year at Edinburgh St James Centre, Glasgow, and Manchester—dates announced soon!
